Handbag Theft
What You Can Do To Reduce The Risk?
Although we may rarely stop and think of it, a person alone is
vulnerable to assault and theft. Consider taking some precautions
to reduce the risk
Determine if you need to take your handbag at all. If possible use
an
alternative such as a wallet
or money belt.
Plan ahead, go shopping with a friend or in a group and walk along
populated streets, never take
short cuts .
If you carry a purse, hold it tightly under your arm with the flap
towards
your body.
If it's a shoulder bag, hold it towards your body with the straps
forward.
If walking on the footpath, remain close to buildings, keep your
bag away
from the road - it makes it
a less visible target.
Keep your house keys and identification separate from cash, credit
cards
and jewellery.
Do not carry more money than you need.
Use ATM (automatic teller machines) only when you feel it is safe
to do so
and whenever possible use the
in store EFTPOS facilities.
On shopping days try to vary your routine - don't be a creature
of habit
Whilst shopping carry your purse or handbag on your person, don't
leave
it in or on a shopping trolley.
Some major shopping centers have customer service staff who can
provide an escort to and from
your vehicle for your safety.
If you have a personal audible alarm, fit it to your key ring and
carry it on
your person at all times.
Always remain alert and be aware of your surroundings.
IF IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU:
Be prepared to give up your handbag rather than risk injury.
Note description of the offenders to assist Police in identifying
the
offenders.
Try and make a note of the registration number of any vehicle used
along
with a description of the car.
